Porto Giunco beach, in Villasimius, Sardinia is a surfing spot that is definitely worth a try.
Surfing, spot review: Porto Giunco, Villasimius, Sardinia
It's strange that the guides we consulted describe it as a banal beach break. We happened to enjoy two consecutive days of tidy and clean bars in this spot.
You can access the spot by parking, quite comfortably, in the parking lot behind the beach, at the southern end of the bay, and the Notteri pond (see our map below).
Once you have put on your wetsuit and prepared your board, you can then walk along the path to the beach. The spot, given its exposure, clearly works with swell from the East. In fact, we happened to try the spot at the end of March 2025, with swell from the East after two consecutive days of wind from the same direction. When the wind dropped, it got a beautiful residual swell. It's better if there is a light wind from the western quadrants that keeps the wave face up. The swell from the East (or even from the South East) goes around the promontory on which the Torre di Porto Giunco stands, and gets tidy, giving some nice, spaced and clean bars. With bigger swell, you generally surf the easier peak, located further South in the bay (see our map). With less important swell, you also surf the second peak, immediately further North, while those even further North, towards the center of the bay, generally do close-out, and are chaotic.
The southernmost peak, generally, breaks in the center, and the waves can be surfed both as lefts and as rights (more frequently). The most challenging peak, generally, forms right waves. We had fun the first day with waves of 1-2 meters, easier to catch (steeper), a little more challenging, and a little more messy. The second day the residual swell gave us waves of 1-1.5 meters, wonderfully smooth and spaced.
It is important to keep in mind that it is absolutely best to enter the water at the southern end of the beach, using a rip curl, which takes you out, without fighting against the breaking waves. Obviously, leave the rip curl 60-70 meters from the shore, to head towards the peaks, and do not let them take you too far out. When in doubt, watch the locals!
The parking lot, out of season, is appreciated by those who love vanlife, or travel in a camper, and spend the night here. We preferred to go elsewhere due to the presence of too many mosquitoes, already at the end of March....
If you have any energy left, after surfing you can take a nice walk along the coastal path that leads to Capo Carbonara.
Hang loose. Fabio
