Riceviamo spesso nel forum di Waterwind richieste di consigli per la scelta del boma in carbonio. Ci è sembrato allora utile fare una carrellata dei principali boma per windsurf in carbonio attualmente in commercio (2022).

Windsurf, materiali: boma in carbonio. Quale scegliere?

Nella nostra carrellata, partiamo da alcuni boma di AL360. Non si tratta di una scelta casuale. In tanti anni di windsurf, in cui abbiamo avuto la possibilità di provare tanti boma di marchi diversi, abbiamo avuto modo di riscontrare che i boma di AL360 sono tra i più rigidi (e robusti, qualcuno dice indistruttibili) tra quelli offerti dal mercato.

AL360 realizza il boma E3, sia nella versione con diametro standard, che nella versione con diametro ridotto (slim).

AL 360 Carbon E3 standard

AL360 descrive così il prodotto:

"I tubi del boma e del terminale in CARBONIO sono costruiti in un solo pezzo monoscocca full carbon, senza incollaggio fra le parti; il diametro dei tubi è ridotto a 28, che unito alle nuove curve e alla sezione ergotrigonomica dei tubi, conferiscono alla struttura del boma un elevata rigidità, e un ridotto sforzo degli avambracci per consentire un uso prolungato in condizioni estreme.

Il boma è rivestito con soft grip dual density per una migliore presa, e con una vasta gamma di colori nella grafica con possibilità di personalizzazione".

Culatta e maniglia sono realizzati in nylon con 20% di elastomero; presenta una maniglia molto compatta, ben integrata nel boma senza sporgenze fra i tubi del boma e la maniglia stessa, garantendo allo stesso tempo elevata rigidità e stabilità sull’ albero".

Abbiamo posseduto l'E3 standard, e lo abbiamo definito un boma di "marmo". La rigidità e la robustezza di questo boma è impressionante, e sostanzialmente imbattibile (leggete un nostro articolo al riguardo). Il boma non ha terminale largo, anche se nelle misure più grandi, presenta una curvatura di 42,5 cm, invece che di 38,5. Le misure più grandi lo rendono indicato anche per un utilizzo come boma per il freeride, mentre per lo slalom esiste un boma AL360 specifico. Prezzo: 660-714 euro, a seconda delle misure.

Di seguito, riportiamo le misure disponibili, con i principali dati tecnici del prodotto.

AL360 Carbon E3 slim

L'AL360 E3 carbon slim è un oggetto del desiderio, ed uno dei boma in dotazione, nel nostro set. Non è rigido come quello a diametro standard, ma solo di poco inferiore a quest'ultimo, nonostante la sezione dei bracci abbia diametro ridotto a 25 mm. La sezione ridotta, ed a goccia, lo rende estremamente confortevole da gestire e da impugnare. Il boma è, peraltro, piuttosto leggero, pensando solo 2,1-2,19 kg, a seconda delle misure (2 taglie disponibili). E' un boma adatto solo per il wave e per il freestyle/freewave. Il produttore lo descrive in questi termini:

"Il boma carbon SLIM è un unico pezzo monoscocca, nonchè l’inizio di una nuova generazione di boma di altissime prestazioni e qualità.

Il boma viene costruito completamente con fibre di carbonio unidirezionale HM (alto modulo), grazie alle quali è stato possibile ridurre il diametro dei tubi del boma a 25 mm, mantenedo le caratteristiche di rigidità e di resistenza molto elevate abbinato alla curva ergonomica e alla sezione ovale dei tubi, caratteristica dei boma carbon AL360; una riduzione del diametro di questo tipo rende ancora più confortevole le impugnature, anche per persone con mani piccole, come ragazze o ragazzi giovani.

Rivestiti in soft grip dual density per una migliore presa e con una culatta e maniglia realizzate in nylon con 20% di elastomero; una maniglia basculante molto compatta ben integrata nel boma senza sporgenze, con elevata stabilità e rigidità sull’albero".

Da sottolineare il fatto che, da qualche anno, AL360 lo rende disponibile anche nella versione wide-tail, anche se, comunque, con terminale arrotondato (per AL360 le saldature degli spigoli di quelli a terminale squadrato sono dei possibili punti di rottura). Le clips inoltre sono acciaio inox, e non più in ottone (che tendevano ad ossidarsi).

Di seguito, riportiamo le caratteristiche tecniche delle 2 misure disponibili. Trattandosi di un gioiello, ha un prezzo adeguato: 786-849 euro a seconda delle misure e del tipo di terminale (quello wide, ha un costo maggiore).

CHINOOK

Proseguiamo la nostra descrizione di alcuni boma disponibili sul mercato, con un altro marchio molto quotato ed apprezzato, di cui abbiamo avuto diretta esperienza: Chinook. I due principali modelli di boma in carbonio del noto marchio americano sono l'RDG, a diametro ridotto, e il Pro 1, a diametro standard.

BOMA CHINOOK RDG 100% PREPREG CARBON 24.5MM-SUPER SKINNY

Abbiamo posseduto, per qualche tempo, questo modello di boma a diametro ridotto, di gamma top (leggi la nostra recensione), e confermiamo che si tratta di un ottimo prodotto, costruito con materiali di qualità, e molto curato nei dettagli. Ha una rigidità molto elevata, anche se non pari, a nostro parere, a quella dell'AL360 E3 Slim già considerato sopra.

Il produttore descrive così il boma:

"The Chinook Sailing RDG Carbon Boom 135-185cm is handmade in the Columbia Gorge and ready to get you out on the water. The Monocoque custom composite body with a specialized bend curve is light and strong, while the redesigned 50 cm tailpiece is stiff and marked with permanent absolute markings for convenient adjustment.

Il boma viene prodotto in 3 misure: 125-175; 135-185; 150-200 cm. Considerate le misure disponibili, è chiaro che si tratta di un boma dedicato per lo più al wave/freestyle.

Quello che ha range di regolazione da 135 a 185 ha le seguenti specifiche:

Range: 135-185 cm
Grip Diameter: 24.5 mm
Weight: 4.5 lbs (2,04 grammi)
Inside width: 35 cm.

Il boma ha un prezzo al pubblico di circa 860 euro.

BOMA CHINOOK 100% PRO 1 - PREPREG CARBON BOOM

L'altro modello di boma in carbonio realizzato da Chinook è il Pro 1, a diametro standard. Il boma viene offerto in addirittura 5 misure: 135-185, 150-200, 160-226, 180-246, 200-260, 220-300. Le prime 4 misure sono contraddistinte da una sezione del boma di 28 mm, mentre le due più grandi di 32 mm. L'ampia gamma, evidentemente, copre tutte le discipline del windsurf, dal wave/freestyle fino allo slalom-race.

Il produttore lo descrive in questi termini:

"The Chinook Sailing Pro 1 Carbon Boom 180-246cm is proudly made right here in the Columbia Gorge. The Monocoque custom composite body has exceptional strength to weight properties and incredible torsional rigidity. Il prezzo aumenta, ovviamente, con le dimensioni. Il modello con regolazione da 180 a 246 cm costa circa 950 euro.

I marchi sin qui trattati producono direttamente e specificatamente boma, ed altri accessori per windsurf.

Molti produttori di vele e tavole da windsurf hanno fatto la scelta di avere nel loro catalogo anche alcuni modelli di boma, che, in realtà, come nel caso degli alberi, vengono prodotti da altre aziende (per i boma, spesso si tratta di Aeron).

Tra questi marchi, prendiamo innanzitutto in considerazione Goya, che realizza due modelli; il Carbon Skinny Pro, a diametro ridotto, ed il Carbon Pro, con un diametro della sezione dei bracci che va da 27,5 mm, per le due misure più corte, a 30 per le due misure maggiori.

Goya Carbon Skinny Pro

E' un boma che abbiamo in utilizzo da oltre un anno (leggi nostra recensione). E' un prodotto di concezione moderna, con tutti i dettagli (loop and go, wide tail, misure stampate per la regolazione del terminale, maniglia con adattatore rdm integrato, ecc.) che ne rendono comodo e funzionale l'utilizzo. La rigidità è elevata, ma, anche in questo caso, non equivalente a quella del boma Slim di Al360.

Goya descrive così il suo prodotto.

Goya Carbon Pro

Il Carbon Pro è boma Goya con diametro standard (29,5 mm, grip incluso, per le misure più piccole). E' adatto per vele che non richiedono un'estensione del terminale inferiore a 140 cm. A parte il modello più piccolo, quindi, è un boma principalmente pensato per la pratica del freeride e dello slalom. Anche questo boma, contraddistinto dal terminale largo (wide tail), prevede tutti i particolari dei boma di ultima generazione.

Goya, sul suo sito, riporta la seguente descrizione del prodotto.

"Our workhorse carbon boom. The Carbon Pro features the same 100% prepreg carbon monocoque body & extension as the Carbon Skinny Pro.

The grip on both builds is in line with what most riders consider comfy these days, slimmer than standard booms. Smaller sizes are 27.5 mm, larger models are 30 mm.

Severne Enigma 

Severne è un marchio che, negli ultimi anni, ha acquisito importanti quote di mercato. Oltre alle tavole, da qualche tempo Severne ha deciso di inserire nel suo catalogo anche diversi modelli di boma, con il suo marchio. Quello in carbonio ha un unico nome, Enigma, ma le 7 misure disponibili corrispondono di fatto a modelli diversi che coprono tutte le discipline del windsurf, dal wave, per le misure più piccole, al freemove per quelle intermedie, al race, per quelle più grandi.

Questo boma è curato nei minimi dettagli (basti vedere il sistema loop and go integrato nel terminale), ed ha riscosso subito particolare successo tra i riders. ll boma viene realizzato con sezione a diametro 25 mm per le due misure più piccole, 26 mm per il 160-210 cm, 27 mm per le due misure centrali, e 30 mm per le tre maggiori. I modelli freemove e race hanno maniglia predisposta per gli alberi SDM.

Severne, sul suo sito, descrive il boma in questi termini:

"THE LIGHTEST, STIFFEST AND MOST DURABLE BOOM IN EXISTENCE. AVAILABLE IN WAVE, FREEMOVE AND RACE PROFILES.

Anche Neil Pryde ha il suo boma in carbonio, l'XC, prodotto in 3 differenti versioni: una progettata per il race, e due per il wave. 

Neil Pryde XC RACE CARBON BOOM

Il boma Neil Pryde XC RACE CARBON BOOM è prodotto in due misure: 175-215 e 200-250 cm. Come dice il nome, è un boma pensato per lo slalom-race (è utilizzato da Antoine Albeau). Il prezzo va da 1316.00 € a 1,401.00 €.

Neil Pryde ne fornisce la seguente descrizione:

"The XC Race is a milestone in windsurf boom history. The first boom featuring an integrated outhaul system for easy trimming of the sail during sailing. L'XC Wave è il boma wave con diametro standard (27 mm), ed è prodotto in due misure, 140-190 e 160-220. Il prezzo è di circa € 1099 e 1149 €, per le due misure disponibili.

Neil Pryde X-CS WAVE CARBON BOOM

L'X-CS WAVE è la versione a diametro ridotto (25 mm) del boma wave di Neil Pryde, prodotto con due possibili range di regolazione: 140-190, 150-200. Il prezzo per i due modelli è di circa 899 € e 919 €.

Neil Pryde descrive fornisce la seguente descrizone del prodotto:

Boma in Carbonio di fascia "economica"

Volete spendere qualcosa in meno, pur disponendo di un boma in carbonio di buon livello? Di seguito, proponiamo qualche modello di alcuni marchi che potrebbero interessarvi.

Gunsails Select

Gunsails offre un boma con tutte le principali peculiarità di un boma moderno ad un prezzo davvero competitivo: il Gunsails Select. Il boma viene realizzato in ben 5 misure, per le diverse discipline, con sezione che va da quella tipica di un boma slim (24,5 mm), nella misura più piccola, a 27,5 mm per quella intermedia, e 29 mm per quelle maggiori. Il prezzo va da 539 a 773 euro.

Simmer Style SX10 CARBON

L'SX10 è il boma in carbonio di maggior qualità di Simmer, prodotto in 5 versioni, con diametro di 27 mm, per le due misure più piccole (140-200, e 150-210), e di 31 per le tre maggiori (180-240, 200-250, 220-270), chiaramente riservate allo slalom. I prezzi oscillano tra 827 € e 1.241 €, a seconda delle misure.

Simmer style presenta così il prodotto:

"The SX10 boom is designed to give your rig with the most direct, responsive and light feel possible. The boom is the link between the rider and the rig and it much defines its performance. The SX10 is manufactured from the highest quality pre-preg carbon available in both the body and tail extension.
