The Grassi Hut, in the upper Biandino Valley, has always fascinated me. After 30 years, I returned there, with a challenging trek, starting from Introbio, in Valsassina. This time, too, the destination did not disappoint me.
Trekking: Grassi Hut from Introbio (Valsassina)
The Grassi Refuge is linked to an image indelibly imprinted in my memory: a beautiful stone building, dotted with blue-and-white shutters, nestled in a grassy basin on the watershed between Val Biandino and Valtorta, at the foot of Pizzo dei Tre Signori.
This beautiful image came to me one October afternoon 30 years ago, when, with some friends from the CAI mountaineering course, we quickly reached it, climbing from the Tavecchia Refuge. We broke through the low cloud cover of a typical early autumn day, and the refuge appeared illuminated by the sun, once we had crossed the "Bocchetta di Camisolo". While at the Tavecchia we were getting chilled by the humidity of the day, at the Grassi, some hikers were playing cards at the outdoor tables, in short sleeves, enjoying the warmth of the sun.
I never returned to the Grassi Refuge.
In fact, lately, I have rarely returned to Valsassina for my hikes. Yet my hiking career began in Valsassina, with an unforgettable ascent to the summit of Northern Grigna peak, starting from Pian de Resinelli, at just 11 years old, guided by my cousin....
I'll have to return to Valsassina more often in the future.

Just below the Tavecchia Hut, to avoid the road where Jeeps pass, I immediately took trail 40, which branches off from the road (signpost to "Introbio") and descends through the valley, staying on the right bank of the Troggia creek, mostly in the woods and shade. Shortly after La Baita farmhouse, my knees demanded I return to the road for the final stretch, for a smoother walk.
I returned to the car after a total of almost 19 km (and 3.5 hours to get back down), quite tired but satisfied, and even a little proud of my small adventure.
