The hike I'm suggesting in this article is simply wonderful. The loop walk, climbing to Achill Head and Croaghaun from Keem Bay (Achill Island, Ireland), offers breathtaking views and thrills. Choose a day with good weather and go walking.

Croaghaun and Achill Head: loop from Keem Bay – Achill Island (Ireland)

This summer, I returned to Ireland after quite a few years away. I had the opportunity to explore the West Coast and, more importantly, to do some great hiking and cycling (the island is truly perfect for exploring by bike).

County Mayo is home to the stunning Achill Island, an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. A lovely bike ride takes you along the recently completed cycle path from Westport to Keel Beach (the Great Western Greenway).

To descend, you have to venture back through meadows (my phone died here, so I didn't record this part of the trail), laboriously descending the steep slope southward, towards Keem Bay. It's best to head southwest, when you are almost at the base of the slope, descending into the valley between the two aforementioned lakes and the beach, and then returning to Keem Bay, where you can finally enjoy a well-deserved summer refreshment (and in Ireland, that means only one thing: a pint of Guinness). In the summer, a kiosk selling food and drinks is open.

Enjoy your hike. Fabio
