The Engadine is a guarantee! In a time, when ready tracks in the Alps are still few, for lack of snow, the Swiss valley gave us a beautiful day of cross-country skiing between Sils and Silvaplana.

Cross-country skiing: Sils - Silvaplana (Switzerland), December 20, 2025

What a great ski run! I didn't think I'd be able to ski this long (for me) last Saturday, and with such good tracks conditions.

I checked the tracks preparation on the interactive map and headed to Sils, where several kilometers of prepared tracks were marked. I started from the Church of San Laurench and headed north. I crossed the plain between Sils and Lake Silvaplana (already with several well-tracked trails for skating and classic techinique), reached the lake, which I then skirted along the eastern shore to reach Surlej, a hamlet of Silvaplana, where, after admiring, once again, the magnificent Schloss Craap da Sass castle (actually a private residence...), I then turned my skis around to return to my wife in Sils, where we shared a picnic lunch on a sunny bench.

The track was fast, with transformed snow, a bit hard in some sections, but still well-prepared. I must say I was also very pleased with the waxing I did, with a TOKO All-in-One, which made the skis glide really well. If you don't wax them the day before, it's difficult to wax with more specialized waxes, related to real snow temperature, which I also own.

The flat area between Sils and Silvaplana, passing close to Furtschellas, allowed me to warm up well; also because the Engadine provided a beautiful sunny morning with blue skies, which woke me from the torpor of last week's gray days down in the plains, where I live.

The section of track that runs along Lake Silvaplana also spiced up the skiing a bit, with a few moderate climbs and descents (I get a little bit bored if the track is too flat), except for the steep and technical one about halfway through the lake shore, with a rather tight left-hand turn. This stretch of trail ascends and descends through the forest, offering beautiful views of the lake. It remains shaded during this time of year, ensuring good snow cover.

Before leaving, we stopped to admire the stunning panorama of the mountains reflected in the still waters of the lakes. It's always difficult to leave the Engadine.

We hope for a heavy snowfall in the coming weeks to extend the kilometers of prepared trails (here and elsewhere).

Ciao. Fabio
